Tata Indicom's Photon+

Tata Indicom(TI) has introduced a truly wireless solution for broadband connection using High Speed Internet Access. They have named it Photon+ . Its truly wireless because it connects to the base station without wires and also supports Wifi. So, you can connect to the photon device(router) using wifi.

This will really bring down the time and effort required for installation but TI has not mentioned the bandwidth(speed) available with this service. Their website says "Upto 2.4 Mbps Downlink speed . Actual internet speed will depend on multiple factors like time of the day, number of simultaneous users, web page accessed, etc." Well, here speed depends on too many things:)

You have two devices to choose from, a USB data card or a Wireless router. You have to pay Security Deposit of Rs.6999 for the router and Outright Cost of the USB data card is Rs.3500. If anyone has subscribed to this service, leave a comment on your experience with Photon+.

  1. Hi, Thanks for your feedback. Is tata indicom providing national roaming? Will it switch back and provide data at 144 kbps (CDMA 1x) where CDMA 2x network is not available?

    Regards.

  2. No, national roaming is not available but Tata Indicom will very soon implement that. Regarding switching back to CDMA, yes it will switch to 144kbps connection when you are out of the CDMA 2x network' reach.

  4. As on now it works in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Jaipur and North Eastern States. Rest of India it works on 1x (144kbps). May be it will expand to other cities soon.

I called for a demo and check at peak hours and found download speed was 1100kbps. Compared to other service providers this is pretty good but not equal to what they claim 3Mbps. Check for more details here.

You can have a look at similar product for Reliance.

  6. I'm using Photon+ and am quite satisfied with the speed (better than the other data cards currently available in the market). However I am not satisfied with their charges - which are high when compared to BSNL. Even the plans which they have offered at Rs. 250 per month with a per minute connectivity charge of .50 paisa is huge.

  7. Got Netconnect+ demo! Speed and latency were AMAZING, was actually getting a SUSTAINED download rate of around 2.5 to 3 Mbps. Very fast website downloads due to low latency of around 200 to 250 ms to US (compared to 250 to 450 ms on BSNL). Overall a good choice for speed, surfing and seamless roaming.. Waiting for more cities to be covered and the TRULY unlimited plans, they CAP unlimited plan to 10GB only! They should be SUED for using incorrect terminology like UNLIMITED!

  8. My experience has been horrible to say the least. They billed me even while my photon+ was deactivated! and they deactivated it within 10 days of buying it! never activated even after I paid up the whole amount! Customer care is totally lost and gives you incorrect information...I would seriously warn any body looking for Photon+ Buy at your own risk. Avoid it if possible! When I am roaming, I use BSNL's GPRS service to connect to my laptop. Its much better in terms of both speed and cost compared to photon+

  10. It won't work in Andaman. Tata Indicom doesn't exists in the islands. The only service providers here are BSNL, Reliance and Airtel.

  12. Knowledgeable info you have shared, and somebody is asking after the new launched service. I will convey your article to him. Apart from this, I have to say that the speed which they are providing us does agree with my laptop.
